1940 (27 June) Cover from Italian gunboat ‘Lepanto’ in Shanghai to Italy, franked with Italy 50c Victor Emanuel tied by purple R. NAVE LEPANTO cds with additional strike alongside. Italian Censor’s label on reverse and NAPOLI arrival bkstp (16 July). With original four-page letter handwritten in Italian. With 2010 Marchese photo certifcate. Fine usage shortly after Italy’s entry into the Second World War and its invasion of Southern France. One of the few Italian warships that served in the Far East during the war, the Lepanto was scuttled by its crew in Shanghai on 9 Sept. 1943 following Italy’s surrender, to prevent its capture by the Japanese.
